Having given up my life as a 25 stone prop forward, I decided to get healthy with Northampton Saints ‘Move like a Pro’ campaign by Movember back in 2016. As part of this course, I discovered the joy of running. That, combined with our new dog – who seemed to have boundless energy – meant I gradually worked up to being able to run a half marathon a year later. I was lucky enough to get a place for the London Marathon in 2018 with Movember and although that run didn’t go entirely to plan, I was determined to get fitter and be able to run faster.
After moving to Teesside in the summer of 2019, I joined the Eagles. Needless to say, I have been encouraged to get fitter and run further than I ever thought I would be able to do. I took part in my first Solstice run later that year and – with the amazing encouragement of my new running buddies – I made it round. During lockdown 2020, I managed to up my distance and took on my first Ultra: the Hardmoors 60. Since then, I have taken on even more Hardmoors’ Ultras – I am at my happiest on the trails.
I qualified as a Run Leader at the beginning of 2021 and have enjoyed introducing many of the Eagles to the trails around Ingleby Barwick as well as the delights of hill training! It’s been a real joy to welcome so many new members recently too and to help them feel part of our Eagle family.
When I’m not out running, I work for the local Anglican Church in Ingleby Barwick as a Pioneer Minister. My wife, Shelly, and I also run Digital Saints and online community of faith which broadcasts Night Prayer through Facebook Live.
