With one year of the Beginners’ Course lost due to Covid restrictions, there was certainly an abundance of people wanting to join in 2021! Therefore, it was decided that this year two groups would take place each week: one on Wednesdays and the other on Thursdays. On the 19th and 20th May, those Beginners started their 9 week course. Week by week, they built up from running short intervals with longer walking breaks in between, to running the majority of the sessions. During the final week, they all completed their very first non-stop 5k, receiving medals at the end! Well done ex Beginners!
“The Beginners Course was a fantastic introduction to running. Everyone was accommodated. We all graduated with a medal, which I am immensely proud of. A very well-organised and friendly club.” – Sam
“Beginners was really good. The people are very supportive and being in a group provides good motivation to keep going. I pushed myself a lot thanks to the club, and I’m grateful for that.” – Lily
“Having had a long break from running, I completed the couch to 5k on my own. It was tough, frustrating and quite boring to be frank. Once it was done, my runs started to fizzle out. Then a friend reposted about the beginners sessions from the Eagle’s Facebook page. At the bargain price of £15, I signed up without pause for thought! I am so glad I joined. From the first session, I felt supported and welcomed. Everyone was friendly and had the same bit of self-doubt. The sessions were far from boring and so much more enjoyable than running on my own. I really liked that there was always more than one Eagle there to help out – I never felt like I was running on my own and no one ever got left behind. Leaders volunteered each week to host an informal ‘homework’ session on Saturday mornings, so there was the opportunity to run with the club twice a week. This definitely helped many of us to get out and to feel part of the club. A few of us enjoyed Saturday homework so much that we carried on meeting up after beginners had finished! Beginners’ is a great way to ease your way into the club if you haven’t run before or you’ve had a long break from running. PBs are great but the club is about so much more than that”. – Catherine
